Ministries at Saint Cecilia

Ministries of Hospitality

Our parish greeters are the first face of the parish, extending a warm welcome to parishioners and visitors. Greeters distribute music programs and bulletins, they answer questions, they invite people to bring forward our gifts of bread and wine at the Eucharistic Liturgy, and they invite parishioners to help with the offertory collection. For more information about this ministry, please contact Christina Searby.

Coffee Hour Hospitality

Following the 9:30 and 11:15 Sunday liturgies, our Parish Hall is a lively gathering place where members of the community meet to spend time socializing over a cup of coffee and donuts. Our coffee hour hospitality crew helps with the set-up and cleanup of the Parish Hall. For more information about this ministry, please contact Coffee Hour Hospitality.

Parish Gardeners

Our parish gardeners maintain both the outside front garden as well as the interior of the church to create and preserve a space of beauty, serenity, and praise. The outside plantings are seasonal: late spring for the summer garden, mums in the fall, and bulbs just before the frost. The church is decorated in grand style for both Christmas and Easter and there is a continuing need for watering and refreshing the arrangements during the course of the season. For more information about this ministry, please contact Susan Donnelly.

Open Door Ministry

Open Door Ministry is a response to Pope Francis’ call for us to keep our churches open for prayer during the week. To do this in a way that both creates an atmosphere of welcome hospitality and ensures the safety and proper respect, we invite volunteers to sign-up to be present in the church during a specific period of time each week. [email protected]

Parish Events

Under the direction of our Events and Facilities Manager, those who volunteer to assist with parish events help plan and execute parish receptions for our annual Christmas concert, the reception to welcome our newly initiated following the Great Vigil of Easter, and our annual Summerfest celebration. There are sometimes other events that take place during the year in addition to these three major annual events.  [email protected]

Liturgical and Musical Ministries

Altar Servers

Our parish altar servers are children (grade 4 and above) and adults who assist the celebrant in the Sunday celebration of the liturgy, as well as on holy days. Altar servers carry the cross and candles in procession; they hold the Missal for the celebrant; they prepare the altar for the Liturgy of the Eucharist, and they help receive the gifts of bread and wine. Altar servers must be able to take direction, they should be able to anticipate what needs to happen in the liturgy, and they need to be able to act in a dignified manner. For more information about this ministry, please contact Scott MacDonald.

Lectors are entrusted with the work of proclaiming the Sacred Scripture to those assembled at the Sunday Eucharist. Lectors also raise the community’s prayer to God by leading the Prayer of the Faithful. Individuals interested in this ministry must possess the ability to proclaim the sacred texts intelligibly and comfortably. They must also possess the desire to share the Word with others as well as a willingness to grow in understanding of the scriptures. For more information about this ministry, please contact Letitia Howland.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion assist with the distribution of the Lord’s Body and Blood at Mass. For more information about this ministry, please contact Jenny Jones.

Music Ministry

The parish choirs and instrumental ensembles support the liturgical assembly in song at our 9:30, 11:15, and 6:00 p.m. Sunday liturgies as well as on major feast days throughout the year. The choirs are open to new singers and instrumentalists at any time. For more information or to schedule an audition, please contact Robert Duff.

Social and Racial Justice Ministry

This parish ministry is a non-partisan, but politically and socially engaged Catholic advocacy group for social and racial justice. The work of this ministry is grounded in the Gospel message that we are all one in Christ Jesus, and emphasis is placed on Catholic Social Teaching, particularly the call to protect the dignity of the most vulnerable. Members seek to connect with and amplify existing groups across the Boston ecumenical community, while also infusing social and racial justice into the whole of our parish.

Nativity Preparatory School
Nativity Prep is a tuition-free Jesuit middle school serving boys of all faiths from low-income Boston families. The school requires participation in evening study and Saint Cecilia sends tutors each week during the academic year to work with boys one-on-one on their homework. Additionally, the parish provides dinner four times per semester for the boys, staff, and tutors—close to 60 meals. We are looking for a roster of substitute tutors who can fill in for the regular tutors who have committed to a weekly assignment, and folks to either provide desserts, juice, or funds to contribute to serving dinner. We have a limited but real need for helpers to cook, clean, and serve. For more information on participating in this ministry, please contact Susan Donnelly.

Advent Giving Tree

The annual Advent Giving Tree invites parishioners to celebrate the season of Advent by providing Christmas gifts to men, women, and children in need. The Advent Giving Tree, dressed with gift tags, is placed in the narthex on the First Sunday of Advent. Help is needed to prepare tags, assemble and decorate the tree, and sort gifts as they arrive. For more information about this ministry, please contact Ann Faldetta.

Rainbow Ministry

Saint Cecilia Parish welcomes lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQ) Catholics to worship God, to fully participate in the life of this community, and to speak openly in an environment that is safe, loving, and supportive. The Saint Cecilia Rainbow Ministry desires to help LGBTQ Catholics seek reconciliation with the Church. In the past, this group has organized a Lenten speaker series, volunteer opportunities, and social events. For more information about this ministry, please contact Charles Petit.

Young Families Ministry

This new parish ministry was created to provide opportunities for fellowship and mutual support for our families with infants and children younger than four years of age as well as to expectant couples. This group meets monthly on Sunday mornings. There are also opportunities for parishioners who wish to provide occasional childcare or who might like to provide a meal for parents who are welcoming a child into their family. [email protected]
